Student visa basics: UK, US, Canada, Australia and Germany
What each popular country asks for before it grants a student visa, the document your university issues, and where to check the current rules on official websites.

Every country runs its own student visa system, but the overall shape is similar. You get an offer from a recognised institution, the institution issues an official document confirming your place, you show you can pay for your course and living costs, and you apply to the government — not the university — for permission to study.
This guide explains that shape for five countries Indian students often consider. It deliberately does not list fees, required bank balances or processing times, because they change. Always check the official page linked in each section before you act.
The pattern most countries follow
- An unconditional offer from an institution that is allowed to host international students.
- An official confirmation document issued by that institution (each country names it differently).
- Proof of funds for tuition and living costs, in the form the government asks for.
- The visa or permit application, usually online, often with biometrics and sometimes an interview.
- Health cover where required.
Agents, consultants and websites (including this one) cannot approve a visa. Only the government decides.
United Kingdom: Student visa
You need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed student sponsor. The UK government page explains eligibility, the money you must show, how early you can apply and what documents you need.

United States: F-1 student visa
Your school must be certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program. It issues a Form I-20. You then pay the SEVIS fee, complete the online visa application and attend an interview at a US embassy or consulate.

Canada: study permit
You need a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution. Depending on your programme, you may also need a provincial or territorial attestation letter. Check the current list of required documents on the official page.

Australia: Student visa (subclass 500)
Your provider issues a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). The Department of Home Affairs sets the remaining requirements, including health insurance.

Germany: national visa for study
You apply at the German mission for your area with your admission letter and proof of finances. Germany accepts several ways to prove funds. Check which ones apply to you.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying too late. Each country publishes how early you can apply. Note it as soon as you accept an offer.
- Funds that don't match the rules. Governments are specific about whose money counts, how long it must be held and what documents prove it.
- Copying someone else's checklist. Requirements depend on your course, your institution and the year you apply.
- Trusting unofficial fee tables. Use the government page on the day you pay.
